YouTube’s Advertising Revenue Eclipses Major Hollywood Studios in 2025
The digital video platform has achieved remarkable financial milestones in 2025, demonstrating the dramatic shift in media consumption patterns and advertising spending.
Research conducted by Moffett Nathanson reveals that YouTube generated an extraordinary $40.4 billion in advertising revenue during 2025. This figure significantly exceeds the collective advertising income of four entertainment industry giants: Disney, NBC, Paramount, and Warner Bros. Discovery, which together earned $37.8 billion in ad revenue.
This development represents a complete reversal from the previous year’s performance. In 2024, YouTube’s advertising income of $36.1 billion lagged behind the combined $41.8 billion generated by these traditional media powerhouses. The platform has now established itself as the dominant force in digital advertising.
The transformation highlights the ongoing disruption of traditional entertainment business models. While established studios continue to grapple with declining linear television viewership and escalating production expenses, YouTube maintains its rapid growth trajectory. Despite substantial investments in proprietary streaming services by legacy media companies, the platform’s competitive advantage continues to expand.
Alphabet, YouTube’s parent corporation, disclosed that the platform’s total revenue reached $60 billion in 2025. This comprehensive figure encompasses various subscription-based services including YouTube TV, YouTube Premium, YouTube Music, and NFL Sunday Ticket. The total substantially surpasses Netflix’s annual revenue of $45.2 billion.
Traditional media companies also derive significant income from subscription services. Disney’s media division, for instance, generated $60.9 billion in total revenue last year when subscription earnings are included in the calculation.
While YouTube’s advertising performance is impressive, it remains below the levels achieved by other technology companies. Meta reported advertising revenue of $196.2 billion in 2025, maintaining its position as the industry leader. Nevertheless, YouTube continues attracting advertisers seeking to reach audiences, particularly younger demographics who increasingly consume content on the platform. The company’s fourth-quarter advertising revenue reached $11.4 billion.
YouTube is simultaneously expanding its technological capabilities through artificial intelligence investments. The company recently announced the extension of its deepfake detection system to include government officials, politicians, and journalists in a pilot program. This technology identifies artificially generated content and enables affected individuals to request removal when policy violations occur.
