Xiaomi 17 Ultra Elevates Mobile Photography with Innovative Camera Accessories
While American consumers typically focus on Apple iPhones, Samsung Galaxy devices, and Google Pixel phones when discussing premium camera smartphones, users in Asia and Europe enjoy access to a broader selection of manufacturers. Companies such as Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo have significantly enhanced their photographic capabilities to compete in this space.
The recently launched Xiaomi 17 Ultra exemplifies this trend, featuring a prominent camera module that accommodates multiple versatile sensors. The device benefits from a collaboration with renowned German optics company Leica, which contributes software enhancements and photographic expertise to improve image capture quality.
This smartphone offers extensive photographic options, including multiple hardware focal lengths and numerous filters and settings for customizing final image appearance. Additionally, Xiaomi has developed external accessories that attach directly to the camera system, along with a USB-connected add-on featuring physical controls for video and photo capture. While these accessories don’t necessarily introduce groundbreaking features, they significantly improve single-handed camera operation.
Beyond photography, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra incorporates premium components designed to compete with leading smartphones of 2026. The device runs on Qualcomm’s newest Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 processor, which will power flagship devices throughout the year. The front display measures 6.9 inches with AMOLED technology, offering 1200 x 2608 pixel resolution and 120Hz refresh rate.
The screen delivers exceptional brightness, reaching peak levels of 3,500 nits. This capability proves valuable for outdoor usage in bright conditions and enhances the video viewing experience significantly.
The 6,000 mAh battery represents one of the most impressive achievements of Xiaomi’s Silicon/Carbon-Ion technology implementation. Given its substantial capacity, the battery can sustain light to moderate usage for multiple days while maintaining excellent standby performance. Despite the large battery, the phone remains lighter than the iPhone Pro Max, showcasing effective engineering.
Charging capabilities include 90W wired charging support, compatible with the included charger or any PD 3.0 or PPS-based charger. The device also supports 50W charging with Xiaomi’s proprietary charger. Memory configurations include 16GB of RAM with storage options of 512GB and 1TB.
Camera System and Performance
The primary camera utilizes a 1-inch type 50-megapixel sensor with f/1.67 aperture, designed to maximize light gathering capability. This camera produces sharp, vibrant images while maintaining accurate white balance across various lighting conditions. Similar to the iPhone Pro Max, the main camera offers multiple framing options equivalent to 23mm, 28mm, and 35mm focal lengths.
A distinctive 200-megapixel telephoto lens provides continuous optical zoom ranging from 3.2x to 4.3x, rather than traditional fixed zoom levels like 2x and 4x. This feature proves particularly useful for photographing pets or precisely framing specific subjects. However, the camera interface limits easy access to 75mm, 85mm, 90mm, and 100mm focal lengths, requiring manual adjustment for intermediate focal lengths.
The ultrawide camera features a 50-megapixel sensor with f/2.2 aperture, capable of capturing impressive macro photographs. While generally adequate, this camera sometimes loses detail compared to the other two sensors in certain shooting conditions. A 50-megapixel front-facing camera completes the setup, though users should disable beauty filters for optimal results.
Photography Accessories and Features
Camera controls follow standard conventions, but the device offers extensive options for achieving different photographic looks. The default setting employs Leica’s authentic color profile, with easy switching to Leica Vibrant mode. Filter options include positive and negative film effects, Leica-specific filters such as vivid, natural, black and white, sepia, and blue, plus Xiaomi’s proprietary filters including cinematic, monsoon, teal mist, and scarlet.
Two accessory packages enhance the photography experience: The 17 Ultra Photography Kit and The 17 Ultra Photography Kit Pro. The basic version functions as a protective cover that connects directly to the phone via Bluetooth, featuring a two-stage shutter button for autofocus and capture, plus a video recording button. The case charges through contact charging technology.
The Pro version includes both a cover and a camera grip-style controller that connects via USB-C, powered by a 2,000 mAh battery. This grip enables comfortable one-handed operation and includes dedicated shutter and video recording buttons. A customizable dial controls exposure, filters, ISO, shutter speed, or white balance, and can browse the photo gallery. The Pro kit also includes a ring for mounting compatible 67mm camera filters.
Both accessories activate a specialized fastshot software mode optimized for street photography with easily accessible controls. The grip accessory particularly enhances the mobile photography experience by providing camera-like handling and hardware controls.
Market Competition and Pricing
The Xiaomi 17 Ultra faces competition from upcoming devices including the Vivo X300 Ultra, which features its own photography kit with a 2.35x telephoto extender, and the Oppo Find X9. However, Xiaomi’s earlier launch timing may provide a competitive advantage in the global market.
European pricing starts at €1,499 for the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, with the Photography Kit priced at €99.99 and the Photography Kit Pro at €199.99. Beyond its camera capabilities, the device delivers strong overall performance for users who can accommodate the substantial camera housing on the rear.
