American Airlines Announces New Admirals Club for Austin Airport with Outdoor Terrace Feature
American Airlines has unveiled plans to construct a new premium lounge facility at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, marking a significant expansion of the carrier’s presence in the Texas capital. The project represents the airline’s renewed commitment to the growing Austin market after previous development setbacks.
The upcoming Admirals Club will occupy 12,000 square feet of space, effectively doubling the size of the airline’s current lounge facility at the airport. Construction is scheduled to commence later this year, with the new venue positioned on the western section of the terminal as part of the airport’s ongoing expansion efforts.
Innovative Design Elements
The standout feature of this new lounge will be an outdoor terrace area, representing a first-of-its-kind amenity for American Airlines’ lounge portfolio. This open-air space will provide passengers with a unique relaxation environment that no other Admirals Club currently offers.
According to American’s Chief Customer Officer Heather Garboden, the facility aims to capture Austin’s distinctive character while delivering the sophisticated amenities and design standards that premium passengers expect from the airline’s lounge network.
Previous Development Challenges
This announcement comes after a previous lounge project in Austin failed to materialize. In 2021, American had announced intentions to build a new club near Gate 14 in the Barbara Jordan Terminal, but those plans were ultimately abandoned as the airline scaled back its aggressive expansion strategy in the Austin market.
The carrier has since adjusted its operations at the airport, reducing flight frequency by 20% compared to 2024 levels, though service remains substantially higher than pre-pandemic 2019 operations. Despite this operational adjustment, the airline appears committed to enhancing passenger amenities with this new lounge investment.
Market Competition and Airport Growth
The new Admirals Club development occurs amid intensifying competition at Austin-Bergstrom, particularly from Delta Air Lines, which has designated Austin as one of its key focus markets. The airport has experienced robust growth, prompting significant infrastructure expansion to accommodate increasing passenger volumes.
While American’s outdoor terrace concept is novel for the airline, Austin-Bergstrom has previously hosted similar amenities, including a Chase Sapphire Terrace facility, though the new Admirals Club will be constructed in a different location.
The existing Admirals Club will continue operating throughout the construction period, ensuring uninterrupted service for eligible passengers. American has not provided specific details regarding the completion timeline for the new facility.
Broader Lounge Expansion Strategy
This Austin project is part of American Airlines’ broader lounge enhancement initiative. The carrier has recently announced similar upgrades and new facilities at other major airports, including Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Chicago O’Hare International Airport, demonstrating a systematic approach to improving premium passenger experiences across its network.
